Replit and Visa: AI Agents Are About to Handle Payments

Visa has made a strategic investment in Replit and is integrating its payment network into the platform. Here is what the partnership means for UK businesses building AI-powered apps.

The era of AI agents that can actually buy and sell things on your behalf has moved significantly closer this week.

On 28/05/2026, Replit announced that Visa has made an undisclosed strategic investment in the company. Alongside the funding, the two organisations are working together to bring Visa's payment infrastructure directly into the Replit development platform, with the goal of letting AI agents handle real, verified transactions. What the partnership actually involves

The deal has two main technical components. The first is Visa Intelligent Commerce, a suite of payment tools that developers can integrate into apps and agents built on Replit. The second is the Visa Trusted Agent Protocol, a system that lets AI agents cryptographically identify themselves when making payments, declaring their intent, verifying user identity, and passing payment details in a format that merchants can validate against Visa's public keys.

In plain terms, this means an AI agent you build today could eventually take a verified, secure payment on behalf of a customer, without the customer needing to manually enter card details, approve each step, or even be present at the moment of transaction. Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect is scheduled to reach general availability in June 2026.

Replit also announced self-serve enterprise access as part of the same release, allowing companies to sign contracts worth up to $200,000 (USD) without needing to speak to a sales team. The tier includes enterprise-grade controls such as SSO, audit logs, and advanced permissions.

Why this matters for UK businesses The UK e-commerce sector is one of the most advanced in Europe, and British businesses are already exploring how to build AI-powered customer experiences. Until now, payments have been the sticking point: any app or agent that needed to handle money required a bespoke integration with a payment processor, compliance checks, and significant developer effort.

What Visa and Replit are working toward removes much of that friction. If your business builds a customer service agent on Replit, that agent could handle everything from enquiry to purchase, with the transaction authorised through Visa's global network. The agent does not hold card data. Instead, it presents a cryptographic credential to the merchant, who validates it against Visa's public keys before completing the sale. For UK businesses in retail, hospitality, professional services, and B2B sectors, this opens up a category of automation that was not practically available before. You no longer need to write a payment integration from scratch. You build the agent, wire it to Visa Intelligent Commerce, register it in the Trusted Agent Protocol registry, and you are ready.

Adevious AI's view At Adevious AI, we build client systems on Replit alongside Claude and Claude Code. We have been watching the agentic payments space closely because the single biggest gap in autonomous AI workflows has always been the point of money movement. An AI agent can research suppliers, draft orders, compare quotes, and flag decisions for approval, but when it comes to paying, a human has always had to step in.

Visa's investment in Replit signals that this gap is closing. The Trusted Agent Protocol is not just a payments API. It is an identity and trust layer for agents, which is something the entire AI ecosystem has needed. If agents cannot prove who they are and what they are authorised to do, merchants and customers will never trust them to handle money.

We are cautiously optimistic. The exploration between Visa and Replit is at an early stage, and no joint products have been formally released yet. But the trajectory is clear: the infrastructure for agentic commerce is being built, and Replit users will be among the first to access it.

What you can do this week If you are building on Replit and you have a use case that involves customer payments, now is the time to register for early access to Visa Intelligent Commerce Connect. Review the Trusted Agent Protocol documentation to understand the identity model. And if you are considering moving your app to a more enterprise-grade setup, Replit's new self-serve enterprise tier removes the previous barrier of needing a sales conversation.
