CLAUDE CODE
Claude Code development with experienced oversight
Claude Code is Anthropic's command-line AI development tool. I use it as an engineering environment for building, debugging and refactoring production software, while I remain accountable for the architecture, decisions and final result.
Not a chatbot in a browser
Claude Code works directly inside a codebase from the terminal. It can read and write files, trace a problem across a project and make coordinated changes rather than offering isolated snippets. That makes it useful for serious engineering work: understanding an unfamiliar repository, refactoring a module or implementing a feature across the front end, back end, database and APIs.
Deep code reasoning, directed by a human
Claude Code can reason about complex code, but it does not understand your commercial priorities unless someone provides that direction. I bring more than 25 years of business and technical experience to every decision. I define the outcome, challenge weak assumptions, review the changes and validate the result. The tool accelerates the work; judgement keeps it coherent.
What I use it for
I use Claude Code when a project benefits from deep access to the whole codebase and a disciplined engineering workflow.
- Building full-stack applications from a clear brief
- Tracing bugs across multiple files and services
- Refactoring older code without losing behaviour
- Adding features to existing production systems
- Running tests, type checks and production builds
Replit plus Claude Code
Replit remains my platform of choice for many client builds because it brings hosting, databases and deployment together. Claude Code adds an engineering layer: it can work inside Replit projects for complex debugging and refactoring, or independently when a full-stack application needs a code-first workflow outside Replit. I use the combination when both speed of deployment and depth of engineering matter.
A production process, not a generation loop
Every change starts with a bounded task and an understanding of its wider impact. I review the proposed approach, supervise the implementation and check the user journey afterwards. Relevant tests, type checks and builds provide evidence, but I also inspect error states, permissions, validation and the way real people use the feature. A passing build is not the same as a finished product.
Faster delivery without lower standards
Claude Code can compress work that used to take days of searching and repetitive editing into a focused engineering session. That is valuable, but only when the surrounding process is sound. I keep version-controlled changes understandable, avoid disconnected AI-generated features and leave a maintainable route for future development.
When another tool is better
I do not force Claude Code into every brief. Replit is often the fastest integrated route, Claude Code is strong for deep codebase work and OpenAI Codex offers another supervised engineering environment. The right choice depends on the product, its users, data and how it will be maintained.
The difference between speed and haste
The attraction of Claude Code is speed, but speed only helps when the task is understood. Before asking it to change a project, I establish what must remain stable, what the acceptance criteria are and which files or services may be affected. I use small, reviewable changes rather than allowing a broad instruction to silently reshape the application. This is especially important when business rules are distributed across forms, APIs and database logic. The tool can investigate more of the system quickly; I decide which evidence is relevant and which change is safe to release.
Useful for maintenance as well as new builds
A large part of software work happens after launch. Teams need a defect traced, a report adjusted, an integration changed or an older module made easier to maintain. Claude Code is useful here because it can read the surrounding implementation rather than treating one file in isolation. I still establish the expected behaviour and check the impact before changing it. That combination lets an existing application improve without turning every maintenance request into an unexplained rewrite.
Review remains part of the craft
I review generated changes for behaviour, clarity and fit with the existing system. That is how an accelerated workflow remains professional rather than merely fast.
Frequently asked questions
What is Claude Code?
Claude Code is Anthropic's command-line AI development tool. It works inside a codebase from the terminal and supports building, debugging, refactoring and testing complete applications.
Does Claude Code replace the developer?
No. I remain responsible for architecture, priorities, review, testing and the final result. Claude Code extends how much engineering work I can investigate and deliver.
Can you use it with existing software?
Yes. It is useful for understanding unfamiliar repositories, tracing faults and making carefully scoped improvements after I assess the codebase and its risks.
How does it work with Replit?
Replit can handle hosting, databases and deployment while Claude Code handles deep engineering inside the project. I also use Claude Code independently when that better fits the brief.
